Chicago Travels

March 24, 2012

A photograph of the "Cloud Gate" or "The Bean" from a recent weekend trip to Chicago. A must-see attraction located in Millennium Park.  The sculpture was created by Anish Kapoor, inspired by liquid mercury and constructed of 168 stainless steel plates.

The city's buildings, landscape and its visitors are reflected and distorted against the sculpture's surface. The most interesting images and distortions are found under the sculpture where each reflection is warped and multiplied.

Around And Around

The Ferris Wheel is always an enjoyable ride.  The Ferris Wheel rotates around a central axis, and passengers travel in a steady, rhythmic pattern in a full circle around and around. Yet every time the top is reached or at any one point along the Ferris Wheel, something new and different is found in the world below.

The ride at night is especially intriguing with the bold contrast of lights against the night's backdrop. It's a challenge to figure out what exactly is being viewed before losing site of the elements in question. It's always an inspiring ride.

Around the World

Reminiscing of travels throughout Asia by flipping through old photographs, a lesson received from a first semester studio instructor is recalled. "Design is Everywhere," was the first studio assignment. It is true that inspiration can be found in all that one sees and

touches. Everything encompasses the principles and elements of design if one takes a careful look.

This is a photograph from a trip to Macau, there is the creation of rhythm through the repetition of arc-shaped windows that stretch into the depths of the image. The variety in colour, texture and pattern creates visual interest, yet unifies the space at the same time.

Design is all in the details. It is the subtle touches of detail that make a good design into a great design.
